Zhang Qiuyue, Hu Zhengyan and Peng Chuan successfully passed the dissertation defense

 

On May 28, 2021, the defense committee composed of five experts from Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming University of technology and Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences held the dissertation defense meeting of Zhang Qiuyue, Hu Zhengyan and Peng Chuan in Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

At the oral defense meeting, the tutor, researcher Xing Yaowu, introduced the study of the three students during the semester. Through the report and defense of the three students, after careful discussion and questioning by the defense committee, Dr. Zhang Qiuyue, Hu Zhengyan and Peng Chuan, two master's students, passed the defense and were awarded the degree of science.

During her PhD, Zhang Qiuyue mainly focused on the evolutionary history of angiosperm diversity in the north temperate zone. This paper selects two representative groups with rich fossils, Ulmaceae and walnut, and uses the Cenozoic north temperate angiosperm macrofossil data to explore the formation history and driving mechanism of intercontinental and latitudinal diversity differences of angiosperms in the north temperate zone through the integration of multi-disciplinary, multi evidence and new methods. Relevant research results have also been published in the review of palaeobotany and palynology, Journal of systematics and evolution and systematic biology.

Hu Zhengyan's research work during his master's degree mainly focused on the reproductive adaptation strategies of alpine plants to extreme environment. Taking the unique cruciferous plant rorippaelata in Hengduan Mountain as the research material, this paper discussed the reproductive adaptation strategies at the population level by using the homogeneous garden control experiment. The results not only enrich the understanding of reproductive adaptive strategies of alpine plants, but also help to understand the formation process and maintenance mechanism of alpine plant diversity. At present, its related research is also published in the cover article of the Chinese core journal biodiversity science.

Peng Chuan's research work during his master's degree mainly focused on the formation of biodiversity in Hengduan Mountain and its surrounding areas. This paper took diandima of Primulaceae distributed in Hengduan Mountain Himalaya as the research object, and established a high-resolution phylogenetic tree of this genus based on extensive field sampling and whole genome shallow sequencing, The evolution and diversification history of its distribution area are reconstructed. The results provide a certain reference value for understanding the formation process of species diversity in Hengduan Mountain and its adjacent areas. At present, part of its related research has also been published in the journal mitochondrial DNA Part B: resources.
