Banna botanical garden breakthrough three project team completed the first karst plant diversity research
From May 29 to July 4, a joint scientific research team composed of biogeography and ecology research group and paleoecology research group of Banna botanical garden conducted a comprehensive investigation on the plant diversity of karst environment from Southwest China to central China according to the plan and goal of breaking through the three projects "biodiversity protection in karst areas" during the 13th Five Year Plan period of Banna botanical garden. Southwest China to central China is the largest contiguous karst area in the world. This scientific research covers seven provinces and cities in this area, including Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing and Guizhou. During the investigation, the team members collected more than 600 specimens of dominant groups of karst habitats, such as Meliaceae, rhamniaceae, Bauhinia and lacquercus, on the steep karst limestone mountain. Among them, Malipo County, as the key area of this scientific research, selected two representative zonal forests and karst forests, and preliminarily compared and analyzed the plant diversity characteristics of karst habitat through quadrat survey, successfully completed the task of this scientific research, and laid a solid foundation for the second scientific research this year. During the 13th Five Year Plan period, Banna botanical garden s breakthrough project "biodiversity conservation in karst areas" was officially launched in October 2017. According to the characteristics of rich biodiversity but lack of systematic research in karst areas, and in view of the fact that the habitat natural ecosystem in karst areas is deteriorating and the biodiversity is declining, and the demand for the vanguard of ecological civilization construction, In order to provide decision-making consultation for the optimization of protection layout, a variety of toolkits were integrated to study the representative biodiversity groups in karst areas of Southern Yunnan. Biogeography and Ecology Research Group actively participated in the "13th five year plan" project of Banna botanical garden, and undertook the field research and research task of breaking through the research theme of karst habitat plant diversity in the three projects. The biogeography and ecology research group of Banna botanical garden focuses on the biodiversity hotspots from Southwest China to Southeast Asia, and discusses the formation mechanism of plant diversity and biogeography pattern and its relationship with major geological and historical events and climate change based on molecular and fossil evidence. Through the investigation of plant diversity in Karst habitat, it will provide strong evidence to explain the formation mechanism of plant diversity in Karst habitat, and provide scientific basis for the urgent need to strengthen the protection of karst habitat.
